Math 424 is a rigorous treatment of real analysis, covering the following topics: the real number system, metric spaces, continuous functions, differentiation, Riemann integration, and the interchange of limit operations. There is a strong emphasis on proofs, logical reasoning, and mathematical abstraction. It is part of the Math Honors Sequence; eligibility for this section requires a high grade in an honors section of Math 347 (Fundamental Mathematics) and approval of the Director of Undergraduate Programs in Mathematics.

**Readings and homework:**There will be a reading assignment for each class. Each day of class discussion will presuppose familiarity with the material from the previous night's reading. Two or three daily homework problems will be assigned at the end of each class. These will not be collected or graded, but will be discussed at the following class meeting. Come to class prepared to discuss these problems!There will be a graded homework assignment of 3-4 problems each week. Some of these problems may coincide with daily problems from the previous week. Homework will generally be due on Fridays.

You are encouraged to work on the homework in groups, although each student should submit a separate set of solutions. (Please indicate which other students you collaborated with, if any.) Class participation and discussion will be an important component of your grade.

**Exams:**There will be three midterm exams and a cumulative final exam. The final exam may be a takehome exam.

**Grading Policy:**Grades will be computed according to the following percentages:Homework 15% Midterm Exams 20% each (three) Final 25%

**Policies regarding late assignments:**Late homework will be accepted only if arrangements have been made with me before the deadline. However, exceptions can be made in other cases, for example, medical or family emergency. No make-up exams will be given. If a midterm exam is missed because of a serious (and documented) illness or emergency, your semester grade will be determined on the basis of other work done in the course. Exams missed for other reasons will be counted as failures.
