About me: Welcome! I am the Assistant Director of the Illinois Geometry Lab in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to this, I was an NSF Alliance Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa. I remain a Visiting Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago where I also earned my PhD in 2011 under the direction of Professor Peter B. Shalen

I am a hyperbolic 3-manifolds and low-dimensional topologist. It is an exciting time in hyperbolic manifolds!

I greatly enjoy chatting with students at all levels and all proficiencies about math; informally in the hallways of Altgeld Hall with my Calculus students or more formally as a faculty co-advisor with Dr. Ruth Davidson on our undergraduate research projects, or with graduate student leaders in my administrative role within the IGL. I've met lots of students at conferences too (and I may have even directed you here), so please feel free to contact me at rguzma1 at Let's talk math!

One of my Calculus students at UIUC coined my math aphorisms "Guz Clues," and he was promised that this moniker would find perpetuity here.

I was born and raised in Chicago, and still call it home.
