General Information

The Illinois Number Theory Conferences are regional number theory conferences that have been held nearly every year since the 1970s. The University of Illinois now serves as the primary host of these meetings; other universities that have occasionally hosted an Illinois Number Theory Conference in the recent past include Illinois State University and Northern Illinois University.

Initially intended as small regional conferences for number theorists in the Midwest, these meetings have broadened their appeal and are attracting participants from other parts of the U.S. and from Canada.

This year's conference will be held on the weekend of May 27/28, 2011. This date falls in the break between our spring and summer semesters when the campus is uncrowded and inexpensive on-campus accommodation in student resident halls is available. In addition, a date in mid/late May is less likely to conflict with teaching schedules at other institutions and thus should make it easier for participants to attend the conference.

The conference will begin the morning of Friday, May 27, 2011, and will end late morning on Saturday, May 28. We expect that most participants will arrive on Thursday, May 26, and will depart on Sunday, May 29. All talks will be given in Altgeld Hall, an historic building located in the heart of the University of Illinois campus and the home of the Mathematics Department.

Talks

There will be opportunity for contributed talks, normally of 20 minutes duration, though we may be able to accommodate a few longer talks. If you are interested in giving a talk, fill out the appropriate section on the online registration form.

We welcome talks by graduate students - especially those on the job market - and postdocs. The conference offers a friendly, nonthreatening environment in which to gain experience and exposure to a broader audience for those starting out their academic careers. Funding is available for participants in these groups; see below for details.

The conference attracts a broad and diverse segment of number theorists, including many graduate students. Talks should be geared to such a broad audience. Last year's schedule of talks gives an idea of the range of topics typically seen at our conferences.

The deadline for requesting a slot for a talk is May 1, 2011.

Registration

In keeping with a long-standing tradition, we do not charge a registration fee, and coffee, refreshments, donuts, etc., during the conference are free to all participants. However, in order to help us prepare the meeting we ask that those who plan to attend register via the online registration form.

Financial Support

Thanks to a grant from the Number Theory Foundation, limited funding is available for participating graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty without grants. If you are interested in such support, contact A.J. Hildebrand, ajh@illinois.edu. Graduate students should provide a brief description of their research and the name of their thesis advisor. The deadline for applying for support is May 1, 2011.

Accommodation

We have reserved blocks of rooms at Hendrick House, a private residence hall on the University of Illinois campus, and at Eastland Suites, a hotel located off campus in Urbana.
