Math 418: Introduction to Abstract Algebra II

Minimal Syllabus: Rings of quotients of an integral domain. Euclidean domains, principal ideal domains. Unique factorization in polynomial rings. Fields extensions, ruler and compass constructions. Finite fields with applications. Modules. Structure theorem for finitely generated modules over principal ideal domains. Application to finitely generated abelian groups and canonical forms of matrices. Introduction to error-correcting codes.
Credit: 3 OR 4 hours. 4 hours of credit requires approval of the instructor and department with completion of additional work of substance.
Prerequisite: MATH 417 or consent of instructor.
Textbook: David S. Dummit, Richard M. Foote, Abstract Algebra, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 3rd edition, 2003 or 2004.
Grading policy: Comprehensive final exam 35%; Two class midterms 2X15% = 30%; One take-home midterm 15%; Homework 20%.
Midterm exams: Midterm 1: March 3, 10-10:50 am, Midterm 2: take-home due April 4, Midterm 3: April 30, 7 pm.
Final exam: Monday May 12, 8-11 am
