Math 221 (Section AL1): Calculus I

  • Textbook: James Stewart, Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 6th edition, Thomson Brooks/Cole.
  • Prerequisites:  Quant Reasoning I course. Placement in this course requires a U of I Math Placement Exam score of at least 70%. For details see ALEKS. Students must take ALEKS and pass with at least 70% (126/182) by August 27, or else will be dropped from Math 221.
  • Very important: Chapter I (Functions and Models) and Appendices A,B,C,D (Numbers, inequalities, and absolute values; Coordinate geometry and lines; Graphs of second-degree equations; Trigonometry) in the textbook are assumed to have been covered in previous classes (such as Algebra II or Pre-Calculus). This material will only be briefly reviewed in class.

  • Lectures: MW 9:00-9:50 am, Room 114, David Kinley Hall
  • Office hours: Mon 4-6 pm, Th 2-4 pm.

  • Homework and quizzes: All 14 weekly assignments will be submitted on WebAssign. The scores of assignments  #(2k-1), k=1,...,7, will be fully taken into account. The scores of assignments  #(2k), k=1,...,7, will not count. Instead, a quiz with two exercises from each such assignment will be given in the discussion session. Only the best 10 scores (out of 14) will be taken into account. The lowest 4 scores will be dropped. Late homework is not allowed under normal circumstances. Missed quizzes cannot be made up under normal circumstances. Calculators are not allowed during quizzes.  
  • Exams: There will be three hour (midterm) exams and one 3 hour final exam. The final exam will be comprehensive.
  • Grading: The total score is 500 points, computed as follows:

    Homework + Quizzes (20%): 10 X 10 pts =100 pts 

    Hour exams (45%): 3 X 75 pts = 225 pts  

    Comprehensive Final Exam (35%): 175 pts
