/ -- a binary operator, usually used for division

Synopsis

Description

This operator is currently used in several ways in Macaulay2.
  • division in a ring, yielding a fraction
  • division in unevaluated expressions
  • quotient rings, modules and sheaves
  • applying a function or ring map to every element of a list or set
i1 : 2/3

     2
o1 = -
     3

o1 : QQ
i2 : 2./3

o2 = .666666666666667

o2 : RR (of precision 53)

For the programmer

The object / is a keyword.

This operator may be used as a binary operator in an expression like x/y. The user may install binary methods for handling such expressions with code such as

         X / Y := (x,y) -> ...

where X is the class of x and Y is the class of y.
